Learn how to build an actuarial resume that gets interviews. Discover Coaching Actuaries’ new Crafting Your Resume & LinkedIn course, led by Charles Johnson, FSA, CERA, and see how to present your experience, exam progress, and potential in a way employers notice.
At Coaching Actuaries, we’ve helped over 120,000 aspiring actuaries pass their exams. But passing exams is only part of the journey. Turning your progress into an internship or full-time role is a different challenge altogether. And it often starts with a single sheet of paper: your resume.
That sets the stage for our new course, Crafting Your Resume & LinkedIn. Led by Charles Johnson, FSA, CERA—the founder and CEO of the Actuarial Development Institute (ADI)—it’s the first in a new career development series we’re building especially for aspiring actuaries.
This course is now available on your Coaching Actuaries dashboard. Discover what you'll learn in the article below.
Why Your Resume Matters
Crafting Your Resume & LinkedIn focuses on one of the most critical and misunderstood parts of the job search: the actuarial resume.
For many aspiring actuaries, your resume can be a source of frustration. How do you determine what matters most, how much detail to include, and how to present your experience when your path doesn’t feel perfectly linear? This course clarifies that process and helps you tell your story with confidence.
While exam prep remains at the core of Coaching Actuaries, this new Career Courses series is built to support your full actuarial journey, and resume mastery is just the beginning. We’re developing future courses on topics like networking, interviewing, and personal branding.
Our Career Courses are all grounded in a passion Charles Johnson sums up simply: “helping students change their lives forever.” There’s much more to come!
What You’ll Learn
Across seven video lesson–centered modules, Crafting Your Resume & LinkedIn walks you through the process of building a clear, effective actuarial resume from the ground up, with a focus on helping employers understand not just where you are today, but where you’re headed.
Through quick-paced lectures and demonstrations from Charles Johnson, you will learn how to:
- Structure your resume for easy scanning based on how hiring managers read resumes.
- Write bullet points that communicate value and impact, not just responsibilities.
- Present your exam progress, education, internships, projects, and nontraditional experience effectively.
- Tailor your resume for specific roles and get past automated/artificial intelligence screenings.
Underlying all of this is a central idea that shapes how employers evaluate candidates. As Charles explains, “It’s not about having the perfect background. It’s about presenting your experiences in a way that shows growth, potential, and a mindset ready to learn and contribute.”
“Employers aren’t just looking at your position,” Charles adds. “They’re looking at your velocity.” Our resume course helps you clearly communicate your trajectory, whether you’re preparing for your first internship, entering the job market as a recent graduate, or transitioning into actuarial work from another field.
About Charles Johnson, FSA, CERA
Instructor Charles Johnson brings you over 10 years of experience across the insurance and actuarial professions. As the founder and CEO of ADI, he has focused on mentoring and developing the next generation of actuarial professionals through exams, internships, and early-career transitions.

Before founding ADI, Charles worked at Northwestern Mutual on actuarial modeling, asset-liability management, and the implementation of principle-based reserving. He later spent nearly 5 years at State Farm, progressing through actuarial roles before serving as Head of Recruitment. In that role, he reviewed hundreds of entry-level actuarial resumes across life, health, disability, and long-term care insurance.
That recruiting experience shapes the core of this course. As Charles explains, “To land a job or internship, you need an interview. To get an interview, you have to sell yourself on a single sheet of paper.” It all comes down to that.
